Why can different Flower tiles match each other?

In Mahjong Solitaire, all four Flower tiles (and all four Season tiles) are treated as interchangeable. Any Flower matches any other Flower, and any Season matches any other Season.

What does shuffle do?

Shuffle rearranges all remaining tiles on the board into new positions while keeping the same stacking structure. Use it when no valid pairs are visible.

How to Play Mahjong

Objective

Remove all 144 tiles from the board by matching pairs of identical free tiles.

Controls

Tap or click a free tile to select it, then tap another matching free tile to remove the pair. A tile is free when it is not covered by another tile and is not blocked on both its left and right sides.

Step by Step

1Look at the stacked tile layout. Tiles on top or exposed at the edges are free to select.
2Tap a free tile to select it. It will be highlighted.
3Find and tap a matching free tile. The pair is removed from the board.
4Continue matching pairs until all tiles are cleared or no more valid pairs exist.
5If stuck, use the hint button to highlight a valid pair, or shuffle the remaining tiles.

Winning

The game is won when all 144 tiles have been removed from the board. If no valid pairs remain and tiles are still on the board, you can shuffle to rearrange them.

Mahjong Rules

Tiles must be free to be selected — not covered from above and not blocked on both left and right sides.
Only identical tiles can be matched, with two exceptions: all Flower tiles match each other, and all Season tiles match each other.
Tiles are removed in pairs — you always remove exactly two tiles at a time.
The tile set contains 144 tiles: Bamboo (1-9), Characters (1-9), Dots (1-9), Winds (4), Dragons (3), Flowers (4), and Seasons (4).
If no valid pairs are available, you can shuffle the remaining tiles into new positions.

Tips & Strategies

1.Focus on freeing tiles that are blocking the most other tiles beneath them. Removing a high tile exposes more options.

2.Match Flower and Season tiles early. Since all four of each group are interchangeable, they are the easiest pairs to find and remove.

3.Avoid matching a tile pair if doing so would block access to a needed tile deeper in the stack. Think one or two moves ahead.

4.Use the hint feature sparingly. It highlights one valid pair, which is helpful when you genuinely cannot see any matches.

5.Prioritize tiles that appear in triples — if three identical tiles are visible and one is deeply buried, match the other two now so you can reach the buried one later.
